The new Haiku fan features a cool-running motor and sensorless electronic controls. The motor’s cool operation enabled a change in the fan’s appearance, eliminating the ubiquitous metal shroud and mounting electronics inside the core for a smooth, elegant look. Haiku’s motor is based around a permanent toroidal magnet, which follows the charge of copper windings to smoothly spin the airfoils. Controlled by a thin remote, Haiku has 10 settings, including the exclusive Whoosh mode to simulate natural variations in airflow for greater user comfort. The fan is also very quiet, producing less than 34 dBA. It is Energy Star rated, exceeding the program’s requirements for CFM per watt by 450 to 750 percent. Five layers of sustainably harvested Moso bamboo, which has a tensile strength comparable to steel, compose each Haiku Bamboo airfoil. Haiku is also available in glass-infused matrix composite material. Big Ass Fans, (877) 244-3267; www.bigassfans.com
