At the center of Sam’s Creek—a single-family home designed by Sag Harbor, N.Y.–based Bates Masi Architects in nearby Bridgehampton—is a sculptural fireplace that anchors the open living and dining rooms. The fireplace’s metal base and surround were custom-made by Ferra Designs and conceal a moment frame structure, a coat closet, and an HVAC unit. The fireplace envelope is formed from overlapping metal sheets, which feature a patinated dark bronze finish on the exterior surface. The fireplace’s interior metal surface is polished to reflect and amplify the light that filters in from above. The metal was chosen because it could be digitally fabricated and easily installed on site.
Jury Quote
“I thought [the] Sam’s Creek fireplace was pretty spectacular. It had some interesting detailing—it was not just an envelope, it was a sculpture inside. It’s highly creative, it’s a fireplace that looks good when it’s off, and there’s rigor to it. I really liked that one a lot.” —Andre Kikoski
