Cape House

MCKINLEYVILLE, CALIF.

This northern California house was designed and built by Joshua Moore of Red Co., Arcata, Calif. At 2,000 square feet (186 m2), the house was constructed for only $189,000. The insulated metal walls, which were sourced from MeTecno API, Modesto, Calif., are filled with polyurethane foam and finished in granite stone. MeTecno API also manufactured the roof, which went up in only five hours. The R-32 roof is finished inside and outside and is maintenance free. The metal frame from Stoltz Metals, Richmond, Calif., is pre-fab ASTM A653 Grade 50, G-90 cold rolled on a 34-foot (10-m) brake. Using light-gauge steel post and beam not only allowed for a resource-efficient building, but also for flexible layouts and window and door openings. In addition, the house is environmentally friendly. Radiant heating provides 97 percent efficiency; wood cabinets are made from sustainably harvested wood; and appliances are Energy Star labeled.
