The new Instituto Health Science Career Academy high school is a repurposed industrial building located in southwest Chicago. Although an abandoned warehouse in an economically depressed neighborhood proved a controversial site, this location gave the design team from local firm JGMA opportunities to both reuse a vacant structure and reactivate the neighborhood, encouraging both the community and students to use the new space. The building’s four floors are defined by brightly colored furniture and walls to inspire students and to maintain a positive and energetic experience. Aluminum composite material panels from Alpolic were used to create a rainscreen over the existing façade. The metal panels were selected for their ability to serve as a weather barrier to protect the existing brick and to improve the thermal performance of the building.
