The second annual International Architecture Competition for Sustainable Housing challenged entrants to design efficient and innovative housing solutions using steel construction to meet the demands of a burgeoning global shortage. Sponsored by Living Steel, Brussels, Belgium, the competition required entrants to submit housing designs for one of three locations: Recife, Brazil; Wuhan, China; or the Thames Gateway on the east side of London. The winners are:
BRAZIL Andrade Morettin Arquitetos Associates Ltda., São Paulo, Brazil
CHINA David Knafo Tagit Kilmor, Architects and Town Planners, Haifa, Israel
UNITED KINGDOM Cartwright Pickard Architects, London The three winning firms were awarded a cash prize and contract to develop their designs for construction as demonstration buildings in the countries for which they were designed. Fifteen short-listed firms also were awarded cash prizes.
